From the Studio

A peak into the studio

I wanted to share a painting I finished just a few days ago for a friend who recently had a baby. (Due to all of the rain in Atlanta I held off mailing it, but it's all wrapped up and ready to ship out today!)

If you read her blog, you already know about her new daughter, but if not you really have to go look at the beautiful pictures of the two of them! E. was there to provide comfort and insight when J got hurt (her own husband had been in an accident earlier in the year) and I always wanted to be able to thank her with something besides an email. So...right before baby Sloane was born I decided to give her a painting- both as a thank you and a congrats! It's inspired by the giant cactus zinnia she grew last spring, and while it's different from a lot of my work, I really enjoy how it turned out! Hopefully she will too! Have a wonderful weekend everyone!!!

Decking the halls... a little early

Happy Monday! I know it's early, (I'm actually one of those people who gets a little upset when I see Christmas decorations before Thanksgiving...) but I thought I would share a custom Christmas card I'm wrapping up to mail out today. Hope you enjoy it!

Friday Recap

First, I thought I'd give a sneak peak on another wedding order I just sent out a week-ish ago. In addition to her table numbers I also created all of her escort cards. I can't wait to see the pictures from their wedding- it sounded like a blast!

Second, have you gone and checked out Lonny yet? It's wonderful and not only does it completely fill the void (and more) left by Domino, it also has awesome interactive features that I personally think are just fantastic.

Just a sneak peak to get you excited... (have I mentioned how much I love open shelving?)

Third-J and I went to the art opening for David Swann last night and it was amazing. David has been working incredibly hard this past year (which was beyond apparent by his new collection!) and I just loved seeing how he created his own unique pieces yet still noticeably referenced the inspiration he received from Magritte's works. And not only is he inspiring, both David and his wife Michele are such wonderful people. I've known them my whole life (they are longtime friends with my parents... actually I think they knew my parents before they even got married!) and it's always great to get to talk with them and see what David has been up to.

And last (but not least!) tomorrow is my Dad's birthday!! yay!! He and my mom will be out of town so I won't get to see him, but check back tomorrow to see what I sent him :)

Oh, and this is completely random but it's just kind of bugging me. My wireless mouse is on the fritz. Or maybe it's my Mac. Whichever, they are pulling the old "silent treatment" and refuse to work with one another. Not the end of the world or anything, but still kind of frustrating.

Anyhow! I hope everyone has a wonderful wonderful weekend (and that the weather cooperates with whatever plans you may have!) We might take a trip to North Georgia for some kayaking (given all of the water around here is now horribly polluted because of the floods) but who knows. Any of y'all have big plans?

the best way to start the week...

Is with a wonderful blog post review! I sent Amber (part of the duo behind Hip Hostess) some examples of my work and next thing I know, she's emailing me asking if it would be alright to post about me. Alright? It would be awesome! She told me to check on Saturday- since that is when the post was going up- so what did I do? The moment I jumped out of bed (well more like rolled out/dragged out by J and made myself put in my contacts-it's kind of an understatement to say that I'm not much of a morning person) I walked as quickly as my tired body would allow and found this!

Talk about waking right up! I think every artist loves receiving compliments about their work,(and I am no exception) but this was beyond anything I'd expected. I was actually speechless (and ask anyone who knows me, that is a very hard thing to do!) It's reviews like these that keep me designing and painting.

Thank you so much for all of the lovely and wonderful words you said about my work, Amber! They mean a lot and are definitely appreciated :)

Hope everyone else had a lovely weekend and that your Monday is starting off nicely!

Sarah+Alan: The Invitations

I've mentioned the "lovely bride from Australia" I've been working with, but had yet to share the invitation suite I made for her with y'all because I wanted her to see them first. Well they arrived yesterday in the mail and right after opening them I received the sweetest email from Sarah:

"I just picked up the invitations from the post office and they are officially AMAZING! They are even more beautiful than I had imagined them to be. The only problem with doing this all over the internet is that I can't see you and give you a very big hug. I am so glad you suggested the black envelopes..they look so cool. Thank you x 100000000. Can't stop smiling."

Working with wonderful people like Sarah, and knowing I made something so special for one of the most important days in her life makes me love my job so much. I couldn't stop smiling either knowing how much she loved them!

Want to see more of what was in the big cardboard box she picked up? Here you go!

Birthday Party in a Box

It just so happens that one of my great friends happens to have the same birthday as J.

Now this is both wonderful and not so wonderful. The wonderful side is that I will never ever forget her birthday- it's set in my memory. The not so wonderful side is that I don't get to celebrate with her on her birthday (well unless we did a huge double birthday, but personally, I don't like how that takes away from the specialness of each birthday person.) So in order to kind of get to celebrate with her on her actual birthday this year, I made her a party in a box. Have no clue what I am talking about? Well here is the finished product:

(kind of hard to tell, but two of the presents, one of the garlands and the birthday banner are actually raised from the back of the box)

After writing a message inside the box top, I slyly delivered it to her house. Oh and by slyly, I mean looking like an absolute creepier running up to her front door, sliding the box through her mail slot without clanking around too much, and running really quickly back to my car as her neighbor- who happened to be pruning his hedges at the exact moment of the "drop and run"- stared at me like I was a crazy woman). Either way, all the running and funny looks were well worth it when I got her call later that afternoon saying thanks! It made me even happier to know I got it to her on time since she then told me she was staying in to take care of her husband who was in bed sick with the flu. (And given that L is actually a nurse, I know he's being well taken care of!) Anyhow, I thought I'd share her "party" with y'all and wish her a happy (belated) birthday on the blog. Happy Birthday, L!!

Happy birthday, sweetie. You rock.

It's my husband's birthday!!! He is absolutely wonderful and I can't wait to start celebrating once he's back from class.

Now I have to run decorate the apartment and pick up his ice cream cake* from Ben & Jerry's before he comes home! See you all tomorrow :)

*I'm baking his cake for this weekend's festivities, (a football inspired two tiered concoction to not only celebrate J's birthday but also celebrate the long awaited beginning of the UGA football season- yes we are those fans) but for actual birthdays (as in the day of) we have a tradition of buying each other ice cream cakes since they are our favorite kind of cakes!

Sneak Peak

via me

I'm working on a wedding order right now for a lovely Australian bride so I am a little busy and haven't been able to make a ton of boards lately. I'm so sorry! But since everyone has been so patient, I thought I would give you a sneak peek into what I've been working on lately. Promise photographs of the finished product are just days away!

How It All Works

I was going to show pages from my sketchbook, but realized that would spoil the surprise of seeing projects I'm currently working on as they are finished!

Let me just start off by saying I get really excited every time I start a new project. I absolutely love being a part of someone’s celebrations and knowing that they want my art to represent their event or serve as a present for someone special makes me feel all warm and fuzzy inside. But on to the reason for this post. I’ve been asked a few times now to explain my process, so I figured now would be a good time!

1) You’ve Got Mail

I open up my email and (yay!) someone wants to know if I can design an invitation or stationery for their event. It usually holds the specifics (date, place, etc) and sometimes it’s even more direct (as in, “I love your hydrangea design. How much would it cost for you to make the table numbers/escort cards with that design for my wedding?”) This leads to step 2.

2) Understanding What You’d Like

Sometimes I get a client who asks for a design that is “cute, but sophisticated” or “elegant, yet playful.” Likelihood, our definitions will be a little different so to make it clearer, you’ll get an email back from me filled with questions in order to get to know you and what you are looking for.

First, I have to make sure you know what I offer (one of a kind illustrations and hand painted designs) to ensure that this is what you are looking to get. I’ll then ask about what you like and don’t like, what colors you are thinking of using, if there is a theme, etc. If it’s your wedding, I might ask what type of dress are you wearing; where the wedding will be, what type of reception it is, etc. Everything you have already chosen paints a picture of who you are (and how you are as a couple) and will help me in creating the right design for you.

If it is for a note card order, I will ask a lot of the same questions about the person receiving the cards. What are their favorite colors (more importantly what colors do they really dislike? I don’t want to use a ton of orange if it makes them cringe!) what do they like to do, why are you sending this gift (birthday, Mother’s day, Christmas, just because you love them etc) Every answer helps ☺

3) What’s your budget?

Being raised in the South, money was one of those topics deemed “rude” to talk about with others, but in planning an event it is an important issue. Note cards are a set price, but invitations, programs, menus etc. all are priced based on what you would like. How intricate of a design you would like, the type of paper, type of printing, type of envelopes…- they all change the overall price of invitations.
Knowing how much you would like to spend let’s me present options that fall within that budget so you can get exactly what you are looking for.

4) Let’s Get Started!

After talking, I will design a few options for you to look at and choose from. Once you’ve made a choice, I’ll send you an invoice and a proof to look over. After the invoice is paid for and all changes have been made, your order will be in the mail within a month (depending on its size!)

So there you go! That’s a brief version of the process. Hope it answered everyone’s questions!

It of course left out parts like “counseling session emails” I have with brides where I try to help calm you down as you stress about seating charts, ever increasing guest lists, clashing colors, dresses not fitting, budgets getting out of control and all of the other little things that tend to stress brides out, in hopes to help make your experience that much more pleasant. I like to connect with each and every one of my clients and am always more than welcome to help answer questions, give advice, or just serve as an unbiased person to vent to whenever I can!
