Road Trips

Studio Sneak Peek: road trip

Hey everybody! So I have a secret.

And it's kind of a big secret.

via say yes to hoboken

We're in the car right now starting a six week long cross country road trip. Crazy right?! We know.

But it's something we've both wanted to do together for forever and given that we knew we probably wouldn't have another continuous six weeks anytime in the near future to do this, we're taking the plunge.

So! After two years of stockpiling camping equipment, booking hotels and campsites (anyone remember my super excited tweet about getting our Yosemite campsite? yea. that was nerve wrecking,) researching cities and trails, and most importantly hoping that everything would fall into place (which thank God it did) the day is finally here. The house and pup are being cared for, the car is packed (and I mean packed. I'm amazed at the amount of stuff that can fit in a normal 4 door sedan) the ipod is loaded with hours and hours of music, and we're heading west. I am so excited to see the national parks, experience the cities, and see friends along the way!

Of course I couldn't just leave you all with radio silence for six weeks, so while we're gone I have some exciting things to share.

First, my new designs are finished! (yay!!) So every Monday I will do a Studio Sneak Peek featuring a different design to let you in on how it how it came about, what I was going for, etc.  annnd... in addition to that, on Fridays some of my favorite blogger friends will be stopping by to share a weekly dose of summer with you. As for Tuesday through Thursday, I've been busy writing posts for each day we're away so you'll never be without.

Sounds almost as cool as a road trip, right? I thought so too.

See you all in six weeks!!! (okay let's be honest, I'll probably stop in every so often with photos...)

I'm back!

Yep, it’s been about 20ish days since my last post, but I am officially back. I took a “vacation” from blogging in order to get inspired, spend some quality time with my husband (who was on summer vacation from his doctorate program) my friends and my family, and finally to tackle some on going work projects that I really needed to focus on. But now, with school back in session and fall fashions gracing the runways it was time for me to get back to updating the blog regularly with work projects and all the things that inspire me- and hopefully you as well! Before we jump into all of that though, I thought I’d give you a quick photo recap of the summer. Hope you enjoy!

I would have photos of us kayaking (which happened at least once a week this summer), but I never really trust myself when it comes to bringing my camera on board! See you all tomorrow!

Friday already...

via personal collection

How is it already Friday? Don't get me wrong, I'm more than thrilled that it's the weekend, I just can't believe it's already here! And as you all can see, I haven't been around here much, but for good reason- I've been really busy getting some things together for the business. Luckily, I've also been very busy with a lot of fun. A couple fun highlights-

1. The hubs and I hiked the Tallulah Gorge yesterday. You have to get there early enough to get a permit (only 100 a day) but then you're good to go. I wasn't expecting to be challenged as much as I was, but as soon as we climbed down some 300 steep metal stairs and saw that we had to climb (slide, fall, whatever.) down a slippery granite wall and then cross a river to start the hike, I knew it wasn't going to be easy. Sure enough, the whole hike consisted of climbing over boulders, straddling crevices, and relying heavily on your arms to pull you up from boulder to boulder. (But the scenery was gorgeous!) At the end though you come to a waterfall that has worn the rock down so much that it's just one huge slide. One huge really fun slide that dumps you out into a swimming hole! After lunch (and a lot of trips down the fall) we started to hear thunder and knew we needed to get out of the gorge and started hiking back. By the time we got back to the river crossing it was raining- making the granite wall we had to scale up in order to get out incredibly slick. Luckily, thanks to determination and teamwork we got out. And then had to climb another 300 metal stairs. I was expecting my legs to be so sore today, but surprisingly, it's my arms that are sore. Apparently I don't work them out that much!

2. I got to meet Ashley Meaders at a Scoutmob party! She's super sweet (as I bet anyone could have guessed) and it was really great getting to talk with "one of my peers." Granted, I kind of felt a little stalkerish/starstruck given that I am a huge fan of her work and therefore knew all about her portfolio. It was kind of surreal being recognized by her too though  "Courtney Khail? I've seen your stuff on Once Wed!" (but then again anytime someone knows my name/work before they actually know me catches me a little off guard and reminds me exactly how fast my little invitation company is growing!)

3. Not really a fun highlight, but worth mentioning. Apparently someone thought my blog was cool enough to embed a virus in it. Luckily (from what I've heard) no one was infected and thanks to my friend (and site designer) Neil, it's fixed. So if you happened to get a warning the last time you came to the site, I am so sorry (!) but everything is better now so no worries.

So back to work now. I hope everyone had a wonderful week as well and that your weekend is just as fantastic!!

I'm back!

mule deer watching us walk

Hi everyone! So after a nice long relaxing week in Colorado, we are back and (trying to get) settled into our daily routines. The trip was fantastic! I have always loved Colorado and used to visit often to ski, but this trip was different- this time we were looking for where we would like to live after J. graduates. Primarily, we were looking at Boulder, but since we have never actually been there we were a little worried that the reality wouldn't meet our expectations.

boy were we wrong.

part of downtown

While maybe not for everyone, it is perfect for us. Artsy, outdoorsy, friendly- just overall wonderful. It barely took an hour for us to realize that this is exactly where we wanted to move! It felt as though we had been there forever- none of the uncomfortable and uneasy feelings sometimes associated with being in a new, unknown city.

We arrived in Denver super early and as soon as we picked up our luggage and rented our car, we were on our way north to Boulder. We spent the whole week exploring, looking at real estate (we found where we want to live!) and eating. After living in Athens, Georgia (for all of college and then the year after) we were pretty spoiled when came to restaurants. Athens offers EVERYTHING you can imagine and is home to many of our favorites, so we hoped Boulder would offer some of the same.

It offered even more. The restaurants were amazing. The town has the same vibe as Athens (it's still a college down thanks to CU Boulder) but is much bigger. I won't bore you all with the details, but I will name a few places you have to try if you ever visit.

Restaurants

Illegal Pete's- Moe's done right. Eclectic, fresh, and a mesh of American favorites and authentic Mexican flavors. Oh! and they let you order the burrito in a bowl with chips- just the way I like it.

Foolish Craig's - amazing breakfast, really artsy vibe, super friendly, great prices. For all of the UGA grads, it's a lot like Big City Bread but with mimosas and breakfast burritos.

Lucille's - One of our waitresses told us about this place, and then one of our friends who used to live in Boulder emailed me about it while we were out there, so J. and I figured we should try it out. So happy we did! Set in an old house downtown, this restaurant really satisfied. Their grits were great (which says a lot. You rarely find great grits outside of the south), as were their potatoes, bacon, eggs... everything. Not to mention they brought out huge squares of "biscuits" (more of a cornbread concoction) before our meals which were amazing. Mountain Sun- I think this was our favorite place! We walked in for a late dinner (9ish) and given the place was already packed we knew it was a good choice. The food was wonderful (a section just for different grilled cheeses? yes please. Greasy fair-like fries? go ahead and add those too.) and the service was awesome. The waiters rotate around so you are never having to find "yours" and they all have a really fun attitude about them. Our first one went ahead and sat down with us to figure out exactly what type of beer J. would like and when he was unsure she came back with 5 different samples for him to try- complete with a diagram she drew telling which was which and what each one offered. She rocked. Oh, and I forgot to mention the place is a microbrewery so they really know their beer. The whole back wall was filled with taps and they had something for everyone- even a non-beer drinker like myself. Oh, and it's cheap. Which is always a positive!

Other fun things to do (special thanks Kelly for all of your guidance!)

view in Boulder Mountain Park

Drive up Baseline Road into the Boulder Mountain Park. The views are phenomenal! I actually have one as my phone's wallpaper :) We went twice and just sat and talked while gazing out at the white caps. So relaxing and beautiful.

beautiful aspens in the national park

Drive out to Roosevelt National Park. I'd never actually been to one, but J. has. (He and his best friend actually went on a 3 month road trip to visit and camp in as many of them as possible, and this was one of his favorites.) He loved getting to share the experience with me, and after seeing it I now understand why he loves national parks so much. It was magical and so humbling to see. If you ever need a recharge in your faith, this is the place to go. Majestic is the best word for it. Having a picnic with that view is a memory that will never disappear!

Red Rocks

We are huge music fans so while looking around Denver to see if maybe we wanted to live in a city again (we don't :) ) I saw that Red Rocks was only 15 miles away and not wanting to miss out on seeing it empty, we ditched the house search and headed there. It was so cool! First, the fact that it's a naturally built amphitheater is amazing enough, but to see everyone who has performed there (they have huge timeline-esque plaques on the wall of the visitor's center) and how much it means to all of them, you really feel like you're part of something there. It's an awesome venue and we can't wait to visit it often for shows! I'd definitely recommend visiting it if you are near by.

Pearl Street Mall- their downtown is fabulous. So many shops, restaurants- everything. We loved just walking around and spending time there.

Lastly, Eldora Mountain Resort is only 30ish minutes from Boulder and while it's not the biggest, the fact it's practically in Boulder's backyard is wonderful. We spent a whole day skiing and can't wait to be able to make that a regular occurrence!

So main point- the trip was wonderful! We got to spend some quality time together, saw a lot of possible places to live (that was a stress reliever all in it's own) and went on a great vacation all at the same time. Hope everyone had a fantastic week as well and that this week is starting off just a great!

Where I'd like to be right now

my views walking into town every morning

Italy.

My husband and I were in Venice a few weeks ago, and the moment we crossed over onto Italian soil I felt it. The feeling of being home. I'm mentioned plenty of times that I studied abroad there in college and no place has ever come quite as close to feeling like home (well, besides home itself :) ).

If I had my choice I would be right back in Cortona (this time with J in tow.) Sitting on the steps of the town hall in piazza signorelli, eating a number 4 (spinach, pesto, mozzarella and tomato sandwiched in a fresh baked roll) from molesini's grocery store people watching and sketching.

I learned and experienced so much there-from what I wanted from life and who I truly was, to what I was passionate about and how important it is to surround yourself with passionate people. It was one of the best summers of my life and I can't wait to go back and share it with J.

Oh! And on a side note. There was something incredibly special about this particular summer- it was the summer Italy won the World Cup.

By far one of my best memories was the exact moment Italy won. The entire town, all of which were sitting in the piazza watching the game on a screen that had been set up, went crazy. Bottles of prosecco (we were in Italy, not France ;) ) were popped, flare guns and fireworks were set off, and everyone was dancing and waving the Italian flag. Next thing we knew an impromptu paradehad started. I was picked up (literally- by the waist) as well as another girl I was studying with and put into a car with two locals boys who drove us in the parade on their home made float. It was a blast. In case you can't picture it, here you go.

surprisingly, all of it was clean by the time the shops opened the next morning.

Haev a wonderful weekend everyone!!!

Out and About, again

Destination #1 -Back "home" to Athens-town!

Hey everyone!

This week is going to have me out of the office (a lot) so I am so sorry for the lack of boards! I will post as often as possible and promise to be back to normal by next week. Until then, check out some of the blogs under "my inspiration"- there is so much to be found in them!

On the road again...

Tomorrow I leave for a week of sunshine and relaxation so I'm apologizing in advance for the lack of posts! Hopefully the rest will do me good and I'll have many more great things to talk about as well as some wonderful new paintings! I'll try to post whenever I can (and check my email) but I'm not sure if I will even have the internet. Promise I'll get back to everyone as soon I get back though!

Hope everyone has a wonderful week!! Be back soon!
