Calliope

Meet Calliope. I absolutely love this piece and secretly wish I could keep it forever. (But honestly, the studio isn’t where it would shine best- it deserves to be on a wall making others happy.)

Calliope directly translates as “beautiful-voiced” but the story of Calliope is much more nuanced and interesting than simple just having a beautiful voice.

Calliope was considered the “top” muse (of the nine muses of Greek mythology) responsible for eloquence, song, and epic poetry and apparently had a bit of a stubborn arrogance. (The story goes that she was so annoyed at being challenged to a singing contest, that after she won the contest she punished the challengers by turning them into magpies.)

I wanted to capture that complexity in my painting. Beautiful and thoughtful, mixed with a bit of chaos and fire in her core.
