new site!

It's been live for a little while now, but in case you haven't noticed- I have a new site! (Well same name, new look.) Thanks again to my incredibly talented friend Neil, we've upped the intensity and made it just a little moodier. We added larger photos, new work in the gallery (which can now be sorted based on exactly what you are looking for,) new tabs (the press page was incredibly humbling. You all rock!) more ways to connect (Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, etc.) and a new home page with pretty much anything you could possibly need. Oh! And the blog! It's been updated too. (You can follow it in your RSS feed now too!) Larger photos, better layout- I won't lie, I'm kind of in love with it. (Also I keep saying we, but Neil pretty much designed the entire thing. Thanks, Neil!!) So if you could, please take a moment to look around and let me know what you think! (And thank you all for your love and support!! Means so much to me.)

(Also, on an equally exciting note, HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO MY BIG SISTER!!!!!)

kim and courtney cook: squash

Oh Fall. Crisp air, cute clothes, and of course, comfort food. Now is about the time that the farmer's markets are flooded with pumpkins and squashes, and pretty much every root vegetable imaginable, so it's no surprise that this month Kim and I decided to pick a very fall vegetable as our inspiration. (I went with an acorn squash because I think they are pretty and knew that it would be sitting out on my counter until I finally got around to making something from it. Two points for instant fall decorating in the kitchen!)

But let's get back to the comfort food. Something about cooler weather makes me crave hearty dishes. Ones that involve roasting, baking spices (cinnamon, nutmeg, allspice, etc.) and wilted leafy greens. Oh and cheese. Scratch that. I crave cheese all year round. But mostly, dishes that fill your home with amazing scents and make you feel like you're embraced. (Am I the only one who feels like certain foods just hug you with warmth?) And that's exactly the feeling I wanted this dish to have.

This dish is super simple to make. The hardest part is actually cutting the squash (it's dense like a pumpkin) but the rest is as easy as boiling water. All you do is roast and cube the squash, crisp some bacon (though sausage, chicken, or pretty much anything else would work,) brown some butter, and then add things that sound good to you (I used spinach to bring in some greens.) I was also going to top it with lightly toasted acorn squash seeds, but well, I got caught up with some show and burned mine. Whoops. After all that, you just serve it over pasta and top with pepper and cheese. No need to measure anything out really- just add what looks right to you. Our  house loves bacon so I upped that, but if you're more of a veggie person- add more vegetables. You could even throw on some toasted walnuts or something delicious like that. Whatever you do, don't over think it. Cooking should be fun, right?

Anyhow. Enough with the talking. Here are the recipes- (If you want to see my dish, it's up on my instagram account. Follow me at @ckhail)

Butternut Squash Soup

from epicurious.com

Vegetable oil spray

1 2-pound butternut squash, halved lengthwise and seeded

2 cups low-sodium chicken broth

1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon

1/2 teaspoon dried marjoram

1/2 teaspoon dried thyme

Pinch of grated nutmeg

1 cup milk or half-and-half

Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper

Preheat the oven to 375 °F. Spray a 9 x 13-inch baking dish with the vegetable oil spray.

Place the squash halves, cut side down, in the prepared dish. Pierce the skin sides several times with a fork. Bake until the squash is tender, about 45 minutes. Set aside until cool enough to handle.

Using a large spoon, scrape the flesh from the cooked squash into a food processor. Discard the skins. Add 1 1/2 cups of the chicken broth, the cinnamon, marjoram, thyme, and nutmeg and puree until smooth. Transfer the puree to a large saucepan. Whisk the milk into the soup over medium heat. If you prefer a thinner consistency, add the remaining broth. Season to taste with salt and pepper.

from the studio: DIY bat place cards

Why yes, we did dress as Double Dare contestants for Halloween.

Normally I don't do "from the studio's" on Wednesday, but given it's Halloween and that's what these are for, I figured I'd break that rule just once. These can be whipped up in just a few minutes and while I labeled them as place cards, they'd be perfect to tie around a bag of candy for trick-or-treaters (just write "from the so and so's) or a gift tag. Personally, I think they would be amazing on a "Dark Shadows" inspired table with black tables, silver candle sticks, and lush low lying burgundy colored flower arrangements. And for all of you that get a little scared of watercolor, these will give you amazing confidence because you really can't mess them up.

I'm kind of obsessed with sending mail (I'm guessing that doesn't come as a huge shock.) but seriously, nothing is better than receiving real mail that isn't a bill or an election flyer. That in mind, I wanted to share a super simple diy watercolor halloween card with you all today. Seriously, it's so easy that you could whip a few of these out today and have them in the mail for your friends to get by Wednesday. Or maybe even just whip up a few and put them in your neighbors mailboxes Wednesday morning to let them know you're excited to see them during trick-or-treating/at the party/etc. It's all about the little things! from the studio (travel): hanging lake hike

J and I decided to get away last week (was it last week? Working from home I rarely really know what day it is anymore. Wait! It was on my dad's birthday. That was last Wednesday. So yep, last week. Back to the point though because that tidbit doesn't really matter...) so we packed up the car and the pup and headed to Aspen for the night. On the way there (it takes like 4 hours to get there so we had some time) we decided to take a break and hike to Hanging Lake. Yes, I'm aware normal people rarely stop just to hike a "few miles", but holy cow it was worth it. And I don't try to pretend that I'm super normal anyhow, so, yea. Of course, after the hike we drove a few more miles to Glenwood Springs and stopped at Grind Burger- which was a heavenly (grilled burger + a bag of delicious fries) experience. All about balance, people. If you decide to follow in our footsteps (or just like pretty pictures) here's what you'll expect: hanging lake hike

From the Studio: The Grey Collective and American Made

Hey everyone! Just wanted to pop in for two quick things. One, it's the LAST DAY to vote for Martha Stewart's American Made award! I would really (really) appreciate you taking a second and casting your vote for me. Seriously, it takes like 3 seconds. Or 7 if you're like me and can't always read those random number "prove you're a person" things.

To make it super easy, here is the link.

Second, I wanted to let you all know that I was asked to be part of the Grey Collective over on Grey Likes Weddings! It's such a huge honor to be chosen (each vendor is hand picked) and I'm so excited to be a part of it. If you'd like to pop over and take a look, here is my page. Definitely look around the whole collective though- there is some seriously amazing talent going on there.

from the studio: Fern Lake

I started this blog to give you all a glimpse into my life- to let you know more about the artist behind the work. In addition to my work, I've shown you objects I've found to be beautiful, design I feel is captivating, and links to things that are silly/interesting/should be seen. But I realized this past week that I never show you all one of the things I enjoy most- one of the things my husband and I do at least once a week (minds out of the gutter you guys.) I never show you how often I'm outside. You see, we're really...outdoorsy. I pause on that word because it normally brings up mental images of patchouli oil, panic shows (confession, love them) unshaven armpits, etc. and if you know me, you know that I love red lipstick, high heels, and vintage gowns. But there is a whole other side of me! The side that will hike miles upon miles with her husband just to find the most beautiful, secluded waterfall. The girl who collects rocks (whole vase full in my office) and is incredibly fascinated by wildlife and plants (the last part shouldn't be too surprising.) In addition to hiking, I absolutely love camping- so much so J and I took a 6 week long road trip across the country in which we only stayed in hotels every 3-4 days- and mainly just to shower. And although I love heels, you're more likely to find me barefoot or in chacos or boots depending on the season. Of course, all that said, I almost always wear earrings on a hike. Can't be completely void of fashion, right?

So I figured it's about time to share that side of my life. First up, a 10 mile hike in Rocky Mountain National Park that ends at Fern Lake:

Craving: tea carafe (and votes)

water carafe by anna blattert via courtney khailanna blattert water carafe via post fossil

I have had this beautiful, glass carafe on my desktop for what feels like weeks- always meaning to share it and then getting side tracked. Well today is it's lucky day! I'm finally posting about it. Right off the back, it's beautiful colors pulled me in. Bright, but not over powering- unique, but still familiar. Then I noticed the basket thingy at the top and was intrigued. As someone who cuts up fruit and such to throw in water, it seemed perfect. No more fishing out soggy fruit slices, dried on tea leaves, or whatever else you enjoy soaking in your water! Of course, then I saw that it was around $300. Beautiful yes, but I have to be honest here. I'm kind of a klutz. I am constantly running into furniture that has been there for.ever. and drop things like it's my job. This would probably be in pieces within the first few weeks of me owning it. Add that to the fact that I could just wrap some herbs/fruit/whatever in cheesecloth and have roughly the same taste, and I just don't think I can justify the $300.

Of course if you are in the market for a $300 water carafe, I'd have to recommend this one on looks alone.

Also, please do not forget that voting is still going on for Martha Stewart's American Made Award!
